On Saturday, July 28th, Hayground School held its 15th annual Chefs Dinner honoring Jon Snow for 23 dedicated years with the School and Summer Camp. An intimate dinner for just 120 guests,  the evening raised in excess of $250,000. Many former and current teachers, camp counselors and founders, attended including Tinka Topping. “Without Jon, there would be no Hayground …. He inspires me and all of us, as an artist, a parent, a teacher, and as a friend,” said Toni Ross, another co-founder.

The evening began with al fresco cocktails and exquisite hors d’oeuvres, followed by a five course meal on the school’s pastoral grounds, all farm-to-table prepared with local produce. Participating chefs included Colin Ambrose of Estia’sAlex Guarnaschelli of Butter, Abigail Hitchcock of Abigail’s KitchenChristian Mir of Stone Creek InnAyesha Nurdjaja of ShukaJoe Realmuto of Coche Comedor and Nick & Toni’sHillary Sterling of Vic’sCarissa Waechter of Carissa The BakeryJason Weiner of Almond and L&W Market, and fromager Michael Cavaniola.


A five course meal was served on the school’s grounds.

During the dinner, on stage, Chef Éric Ripert interviewed Jon Snow, opening with a friendly volley, “So we’re going to roast you tonight!” John, with typical modesty, deferred to others and read a moving statement by the late Jeff Salaway (another Hayground co-founder and for whom the Hayground kitchen is named). Their lively conversation took many twists; Chef Ripert even demonstrated his artichoke trimming technique. This prompted New York Times food writer Florence Fabricant to add: “My brother once asked me about artichokes. When I told him how to cook one, he interrupted, ‘You have to cook them?’” Ripert later carved another artichoke at his table for the irrepressible Joanna Fisher.

A live auction, led by Mark Ross, featured many unusual, one-of a-kind items. Spirited bidding chased a White Album box set donated by Paul McCartney that would be personalized by him. However the highest bid went for five nights at Toni Ross’s Parisian apartment.

The Chefs Dinner raises significant funds for the School where more than 85% of students’ families receive tuition assistance.

Founded in 1996, Hayground School offers children age 3 through 13 a hands-on education based on mentorship, student-led inquiry, and genuine endeavors in the arts, sciences, and humanities. Hayground School is built on the belief that all children are born intellectuals, are capable of becoming passionate readers who engage in serious discourse and can learn through play as well as classroom study. Children and adults at Hayground practice compassion every day. Hayground believes at its core that children thrive in a community where art is at the center, not the periphery, of life.

Hayground School’s mission is simple: to create a community of students and mentors who explore together the central questions of human culture in the natural world. Their shared tools are meaningful examination, authentic scholarship, a spirit of creativity and a respect for different perspectives. Ensuing socio-economic diversity is crucial to this objective; as a private school with a public mission, more than 85% of school families receive tuition reduction.

Michele Cohen, chair of the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), opened her East Hampton home for a garden party in honor of their new director, Chris Scoates. In a garden of blooming hydrangea by the sea, Scoates outlined his exciting vision for MAD and announced upcoming exhibitions including Vera Paints a Scarf and The World of Anna Sui.

Also soon is the annual Burke Prize for artists working in the American studio craft movement, and the annual MAD Ball on November 4th. In spring 2020, MAD plans a Festival of Glass which includes shows for the stained glass artist Brian Clark and glass artist Beth Lipman. In June 2020, MAD plans an inaugural community festival including Corning Museum’s Hot SHOP. In 2021 MAD plans a reinstation of the permanent collection with the Dutch designer Joris Laarman.

More than 300 guests attended the 15th Annual Hamptons Happening culinary charity event that raised more than $440,000 to support the groundbreaking research of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF).

The SWCRF honored luminaries in cuisine, fashion, and business for their longtime support of cancer research. The honorees were: celebrity chef and Emmy-Awarding Winning cooking show host Lidia Bastianich and generations of the Bastianich family; Ian Duke, legendary owner of five restaurants in Southampton and New York City; business honoree, Antonella Bertello, real estate entrepreneur and owner of the historic The Baker House 1650 boutique hotel in East Hampton; and iconic womenswear designer Nicole Miller as fashion honoree.

“The proceeds generated by the Hamptons Happening help support more than 30 scientists who are some of the world’s brightest minds working diligently to develop a cure for cancer. The SWCRF seeks to award more than $2,000,000 in new grants this year and community support is critically important in this effort,” said Samuel Waxman, M.D., founder and CEO of the SWCRF.

This year, the Hamptons Happening was reinvented to bring guests the flavors of the world to Bridgehampton for one night. Guests skipped a trip to the airport and instead enjoyed more than 25 food, wine and spirit tastings representing some of the favorite five-star culinary destinations around the world including Colombia, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Peru, and the United States. Dessert stations sweetened the night with favorites such as Baked by Melissa hand-crafted mini cupcakes, Kurly Kürtősh chimney cake, and Nutella, which served its famous hazelnut cocoa spread over freshly baked banana bread and topped in hazelnuts. Delicious chocolate ganache was served by MarieBelle Chocolates.

“The Bastianich family is honored to lend our support to the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, who, for more than 40 years, has made a difference in the lives of countless people living with cancer. We applaud the foundation’s cutting-edge work with the science community to shut down the DNA of cancer. I ask you to support the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, so they may do even more to eradicate cancer,” said Lidia Bastianich.

Business Honoree Antonella Bertello, owner of The Baker House 1650 historic boutique hotel in East Hampton featured tastings from her native Peru along with favorite dishes from Colombia. “When I was asked to get involved with the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, I was truly honored and thrilled to be able to contribute to such an amazing cause and their sensational, collaborative research. I know we have all been deeply affected by this disease and, I could not be more pleased and happy to put my grain of sand to help advance their innovative research,” said Ms. Bertello.

Restaurateur Honoree Ian Duke featured American and Mexican tastings from his Southampton hotspots, Southampton Social Club, Union Burger Bar, and Union Cantina.  “I’m very grateful to have been named as an honoree this year by the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation. All of those working tirelessly for the foundation that should be honored, not me, because of the lives that have been extended, improved and saved from their research.  None of it happens without the work of such an amazing collaboration,” said Mr. Duke.

Fashion Honoree Nicole Miller was honored for her longtime support of the SWCRF. “The organization’s funding for innovative research is leading the cancer treatment revolution and has helped countless people living with Cancer. I urge everyone to support the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation so they can continue to change the lives of people living with cancer,” said Ms. Miller.

Miller also dressed Caly Bevier, a finalist on America’s Got Talent who performed Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song” and her single, “Held Head High,” which she wrote while undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer at age 15.

Pat Farrell and the Cold Spring Harbor Band (The Billy Joel Tribute Show) and DJ Lisie from Jarrell Entertainment had guests dancing under the tent all night.

The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to curing and preventing cancer. The Foundation is a pioneer in cancer research and its mission is to eradicate cancer by funding cutting-edge research that identifies and corrects abnormal gene function that causes cancer and develops minimally toxic treatments for patients. Through the Foundation’s collaborative group of world-class scientists, the Institute Without Walls, investigators share information and tools to speed the pace of cancer research. Since its inception in 1976, the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation has awarded more than $100 million to support the work of more than 200 researchers across the globe.
